What porutham checks

Thirumana porutham compares the birth stars and rasis of the bride and groom. South Indian families traditionally check ten poruthams. Each one looks at a different side of married life, from health and children to temperament and mutual attraction.

The ten poruthams in one line each

Dina: day-to-day health and harmony. Gana: temperament (Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa). Mahendra: children and family growth. Stree Deergha: the wife’s well-being and prosperity. Yoni: physical compatibility. Rasi: family harmony. Rasi Adhipati: friendship of the rasi lords. Vasya: mutual attraction. Rajju: long married life. Vedha: freedom from obstacles.

How the score is read

Most families look for at least 6 out of 10, with Rajju and Vedha both present. A lower count does not always mean no; elders and astrologers also look at the full jathagam, dosham and dasha periods before deciding.
